How we help

Headaches & migraines

Frequent headaches aren't something you should have to plan your life around. Many have a musculoskeletal component — particularly from the upper neck — that can be assessed and treated.

Understanding headaches & migraines

Not all headaches are the same, and identifying the type matters. Cervicogenic headaches arise directly from the joints and muscles of the upper neck. Tension-type headaches often involve neck and shoulder tension. Migraines are a neurological condition, but neck dysfunction can act as a trigger for some people. Our first job is working out which pattern fits you.

Common signs & symptoms

  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull or one side of the neck
  • Pain behind the eye or over the temple
  • A tight, band-like pressure around the head
  • Headaches triggered by desk work, driving or certain neck positions
  • Neck stiffness that accompanies or precedes head pain
When to seek urgent care: A sudden, severe 'worst ever' headache, or headache with fever, stiff neck, confusion, visual loss or weakness needs emergency care — call 000.

Common causes

Upper neck dysfunction

The top three joints of the neck can refer pain directly into the head — the hallmark of cervicogenic headache.

Muscle tension

Sustained tension in the neck, jaw and shoulder muscles is a major contributor to tension-type headaches.

Postural load

Forward head posture increases strain on exactly the structures that refer pain to the head.

Triggers and lifestyle

Sleep, stress, hydration and screen habits all influence headache frequency — and are part of a complete plan.

How we help

Your care starts with a thorough consultation and physical assessment to identify what's driving your symptoms. From there, we build a plan around you — which may include chiropractic adjustments (traditional or low-force), soft tissue therapy, targeted home exercises, and practical advice for your daily routine. We review your progress regularly, explain everything in plain language, and refer you for imaging or to other practitioners whenever that's the better path.

Good to know

Headaches & migraines: your questions answered

How do I know if my headaches are coming from my neck?

Clues include pain starting at the base of the skull, pain on one side that doesn't swap sides, headaches triggered by neck positions or long desk sessions, and reduced neck movement. A physical assessment can usually reproduce and identify neck-related pain patterns.

Can chiropractic help with migraines?

Chiropractic care doesn't cure migraine — it's a neurological condition. However, for some people neck dysfunction acts as a trigger, and addressing it may help reduce the frequency of episodes as part of a broader management plan, ideally alongside your GP.

Will I still need my headache medication?

That's between you and your prescribing doctor — we never advise changing medication. Our role is addressing the musculoskeletal contributors so you and your GP have more options, not fewer.
